A backup that isn't encrypted is a second copy of your most sensitive data sitting somewhere new and potentially less protected than the original. Encrypting backups, both in transit and at rest, ensures that a backup copy doesn't become a new vulnerability in your data protection strategy.

Backups are part of business continuity, not just IT

The real question a backup strategy answers isn't "do we have a copy of our data?" — it's "how quickly can we be back up and running if something goes wrong?" That's why backup planning should sit alongside disaster recovery planning: knowing your recovery time objective and recovery point objective turns a backup from a technical checkbox into a real business continuity plan.
